Piaskoski got his start with Spartans

The way Jim Piaskoski sees it, if he never wore the silver and blue of the Sudbury Spartans, he wouldn't be wearing a pair of Grey Cup rings today.
Before helping the Ottawa Rough Riders win the CFL championship in 1973 and 1976, the Sudbury native was a standout defensive end for the local senior men's football team.
He credits that team -- specifically, legendary Spartans head coach Sid Forster -- with paving the way to a 10-year professional career.

When the Sudbury Hardrocks hit the highway during the 1950s and '60s, there was more than football on the itinerary.
For the local men's football team, road games were part sporting event, part social occasion.
"It got so that, even when we were out of town, the home team would throw a big party," said Gary Costello, a former player and longtime trainer for the Hardrocks and their successors, the Sudbury Spartans.

Youth movement for Spartans

You couldn't wipe the smile off Gord Goddard's face.
The sun was shining, the breeze carrying the chill of spring as it swept over the field at James Jerome, while young men grouped off all about the playing surface worked out the winter kinks.
It was the day Goddard had been looking forward to all winter as the Sudbury Spartans began its first day of training camp Sunday with a host of new, hungry players set to wear the silver and blue.
